The beginning of the year is not only the mating season, but also the time when last year's kittens leave their mother. According to the lynx calendar, lynxes born in the ZTP breeding programme also leave their mother to live in the wild.
One of the objectives of the LIFE22-NAT-PL-LIFE LYNX PL LT DE project ‘Expanding the range of the lynx population in northern Poland’ is to release 40 lynxes in northern Poland between 2024 and 2028. This week, the implementation of this goal began with the release of the first two lynxes into the wild. These lynxes come from our own breeding programme. The animals, less than a year old, were released into the wild in the West Pomeranian Province and have joined the re-established lynx population in north-western Poland.
As part of the project, we plan to run our own breeding programme and obtain lynxes from other (mainly foreign) breeding centres. We are very keen to obtain animals whose genomes will enrich the population.
All lynxes released into the wild are genetically tested and admitted to the reintroduction programme after a thorough analysis conducted by a team of specialists led by Prof. Ratkiewicz from the University of Białystok.
The LIFE22-NAT-PL-LIFE LYNX PL LT DE project is being implemented jointly with partners: Spychowo Forest District Rewilding Oder Delta (German partner) and Asociacija Ekosistemu Apsaugos Centras (Lithuanian partner).
Keep your fingers crossed for Nicponia and Szarka! 😊
