Unfortunately, this week did not start with good news. Yesterday our colleague had the dubious pleasure of retrieving the body of a lynx from the area of the Okonek Forest District. Initially, the report from the Foresters suggested that this lynx had been hit by a car. Unfortunately, it did not have a collar, so the body was transported to a veterinarian for sampling and sending for genetic identification. During the autopsy, the chip number was read, which already provided an answer as to who this individual was. It was a female named Merle, who was released into the wild in 2023 in the Drawno Forest District. This female was just under three years old and could have given birth to offspring in the wild, contributing to the development of the lynx population in northwestern Poland.
We put a lot of effort into caring for the biodiversity of our region, which is also meant to serve future generations. Many people appreciate that lynxes are becoming a natural element of our landscape. Therefore, we do not understand why lynxes have so many enemies among humans. This species faces daily problems such as traffic accidents and scabies. We, as humans, do not need to add further factors that complicate their lives.
Let us consider what we want to leave for our future generations and how we want this world to look in a few years.
