In the Dzika Zagroda, we not only restore species to their natural habitats. We create a space where wild animals receive real help.
In two huge projects for the protection of bison and lynxes – a veterinarian plays a key role. In our team, Dr. Roman Lizoń oversees the health of each animal – from birth, through rehabilitation, to the moment of release into the wild. The animals that come to our projects are not left to fend for themselves. They are not just a position in a table, a telemetry point, a dot on a map. They are living beings, each with its own story, temperament, and needs.
Caring for a wild patient is a huge challenge. Conducting even basic examinations of wild animals is no small feat. Every contact requires precision, immediate thinking, and quick action. Sometimes you have to react instantly – when every minute counts. Other times – act with immense patience, leading a long rehabilitation so the animal can return to the wild.
Thanks to the right support and experience, we make decisions that save lives – both of individual animals and entire groups.
The veterinarian works daily with our field specialists, who provide crucial information from the field. It is thanks to this cooperation that quick responses, accurate diagnoses, and effective help are possible.
But it’s not just successes. There are also difficult moments – death, suffering, the consequences of poaching, helplessness against diseases. The moment when you have to say “there’s nothing we can do to help.”
Fortunately, there are also bright moments – when young are born, when we vaccinate lynxes, when we see an animal return to the wild. These moments give meaning to every difficulty.
The LIFE22-NAT-PL-LIFE LYNX PL LT DE project “Expanding the range of the lynx population in northern Poland,” which has been co-financed by the European Union and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, is being implemented by: the West Pomeranian Nature Society (coordinating beneficiary, implementing the reintroduction of lynxes in northern Poland), the Spychowo Forest District, the Ecosystem Protection Center Association (Lithuania), Rewilding Oder Delta (Germany), and the WWF Poland Foundation, which joined the project this year.
