The first lynx born in the wild are the offspring of Cleo and Rudy from 2019. The pair had two young, which were observed until the next estrus with their mother. The following year, 3 lynxes became mothers: Cleo, Nelly, and Rózia, and a total of 7 kittens were born. However, the most fruitful years are still ahead of us! In 2021, the lynx population in West Pomerania was bolstered by 17 individuals from 6 mothers (Rózia, Hyża, Szelma, Mniszka, Luna, and Azjatka). This year’s birth season is still ongoing, and the field team has already confirmed the birth of 6 young lynxes. We hope that each subsequent year will allow us to enjoy the births of lynxes that will create a stable population in northwestern Poland.
Reproductive success is a very important indicator in reintroduction projects. As can be seen, the lynxes we brought, despite coming from breeding centers, are doing well in the wild. A total of 31 completely wild individuals have already been born as part of the project conducted by ZTP. Let’s remember that the lynxes born in 2019 and 2020 may also already have their offspring. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the lynx parents! 😊
P.S. The numbers we provide are indeed confirmed births by us. The number of kittens may be higher. Not all female cats have telemetry collars, which allow us to monitor them.
